An electron microscopic study of larvae of 16 species representing 15 carabid genera has shown that their antennal sensory organs include the antennal cone, trichoid and basiconic sensilla, and setae. The maxillary and labial palps bear trichoid, basiconic B1-B3, styloconic, placoid (digitiform), knob-shaped, and jag-shaped sensilla. On apices of the maxillary and labial palps, there are special sensory plates, on which chemoreceptor sensilla are situated. This type of arrangement is optimal for thelarvae living in the substrate and has been established in other coleopteran families. None of the several dominant types of the sensilla is diffusely distributed over the antennae in carabid larvae. Instead, a complex sensory organ, the antennal cone, is formed. However, another complex organ, the large basiconic sensillum, is absent on both labial and maxillary palps; this fact indicates an incomplete integration of sensory elements in Carabidae. The degree of development of the sensory apparatus shows no correlation with either larval habitats or phylogenetic lineages within the family.
