It was a great adventure," recalls Olympic gold medalist and U.S. Equestrian Federation President David O'Connor of his first crosscountry ride, which he took in the summer of 1973. Along the way, he learned to negotiate banks, ditches and water, butnot the sort he would eventually encounter in his career as a top international eventer. No, during that summer 34 years ago, David's crosscountry experience took him from one coast of the United States to the other, a journey of nearly 3,000 miles.
