New research suggests that the rumbling and gurgling sounds emitted by a horse's stomach reveal important information about his digestive health, but accurately interpreting those noises can be challenging. Jonathan Naylor, DVM, PhD, currently at RossUniversity School of Veterinary Medicine in St. Kitts, West Indies, has been investigating noise-based diagnostics for almost a decade. "First I learned how to make a good recording stethoscope," he says. "And then I began to investigate discrepancies between how sounds are described in veterinary texts and what they actually sound like."
