Certainly for any fan of the horse, it is difficult to look at a fluid topline, a well-sprung set of ribs, a beautiful shoulder or a long and proudly carried neck and not feel tempted—even invited—to climb aboard. We know what those lovely equine curves promise: an unmatched feeling of elastic power and the illusion of weightlessness that allow rider and horse to feel as if they are floating over the earth. A specialized spring system of locomotion known as the "ring of muscles" gives the horse theability to effortlessly carry a rider. Composed of muscles, ligaments and tendons, the "ring" guarantees the fluidity, power and balance we recognize as collection. Our effectiveness in the saddle is enhanced— and our relationship with our horses empowered—by how well we understand and utilize the ring.
