Three sibling species: Chironomus plumosus, Ch. entis, and Ch. borokensis from Chita Province (Eastern Siberia) were identified based on the banding patterns of polytene chromosomes from salivary glands of their larvae. B-chromosomes (2n = 8 + B) were found in 7.6, 26.6, and 20.0% of the individuals in Ch. plumosus, Ch. entis, and Ch. borokensis, respectively. Each species is characterized by a specific level of inversion polymorphism. The banding pattern entA11, previously considered to be Nearctic, can be regarded as Holarctic, since it was found in Ch. entis in the Chita populations. A new banding pattern borA3 is described for Ch. borokensis.
