Estimation of the Geographical Variability of Morphological Characters in the Stink Bug Graphosoma lineatum (Heteroptera, Pentatomidae)

The geographic variability of 12 morphological characters of the stink bug Graphosoma lineatum L. was analyzed on the basis of 20 samples collected from various parts of the distribution range. Specimens from remote samples differed more strongly thanthose from proximate samples. Several proximal groups were characterized by the strongest phenotypic similarity. One of the selected groups was characterized by a low frequency of a certain character. On this background, a clinal variability of some characters of pigmentation was revealed. The trend of this variability, expressed in the higher degree of melanism in more northern populations, well agrees with the known correlation between enhanced pigmentation and lowered temperature of development.
