Sizing and selecting pressure reducing regulators

There are two applications for pressure regulators, pressure reduction and back-pressure control. Pressure reducing regulators are used whenever the equipment receiving the fluid cannot handle the pressure at which the fluid is supplied, Back-pressure regulators are used to keep a constant pressure upstream of the regulator. Generally, when installed to deliver fluids from one pipeline to another, they are called back-pressure regulators, but when venting externally to the main pipeline, they are referred to as relief valves.
