Intraspecific Differentiation in the Phytophilous Midge Glyptotendipes gripekoveni (Diptera, Chironomidae)

Karyotypic forms of Glyptotendipes gripekoveni were analyzed. The revealed morphological and ecological ditierences allowed leveling the rank of karyotypic forms up to subspecies (G. gripekoveni gripekoveni and G. gripekoveni paragripekoveni). No reproductive isolation of these forms was found. The existence of numerous hybrids between these subspecies is the evidence of the selective advantages of hybrid forms in comparison with parental ones. The genus Glyptotendipes Kieffer is an evolutionary flourishing group and the large number of closely relative species within this genus is indicative of this fact. The flourishing of the genus (Kalugina, 1975) is associated with the augmentation of the larval specialization for the mining of aquatic angiosperm plants, i.e., with the adaptation to a relatively new biotope.
