The family Sciaridae, or soil midges, have not been treated monographically after investigations of this group of Diptera, carried out by Lengersdorf (1924-1957) and Tuomikoski (1957-1967). For this reason, an extensive revision of the Palaearctic representatives of the family should undoubtedly be welcomed. The central issue of the monograph is, as defined by the authors themselves, the refinement of the nomenclature and further development of the taxonomy of Palaearctic representatives of the family Sciaridae. The authors accept the limits of the Palaearctic Region according to Theischinger and Theowald (1981), except that they include in this region Greenland as a part of the territory of Denmark. A map with boundaries of the Palaearctic Region is presented. A total of 1313 taxa of species rank are described in the family Sciaridae from the Palaearctic fauna. The authors consider 836 of these to be valid taxa, which constitutes 48.9% of the known World fauna (2280 nominal species). The number of genera in the World fauna is 58; 28 of these are known from the Palaearctic Region.
