Beating the heat: a new device quickly cools the entire body

A technology first used to warm up hospital patients after surgery can now keep you cool on the jobsite. Unlike cooling vests and gel packs you have to wear all the time, CoreControl is a small vacuum chamber that you put your hand in for two to three minutes. Approved by the Food and Drug Administration in 2003, CoreControl lowers core body temperature by taking advantage of heat-dissipating blood vessels in the hand. "We've found a way to maximize the capacity of these vascular structures by drawing a slight negative pressure," says Dennis Grahn, a biology professor at Stanford University and a co-inventor of the device. "It's perfect for construction workers and farmers."
