New Data on Grass Flies (Diptera, Chloropidae) of the Chukchi Autonomous Area

Twenty species of Chloropidae were collected using yellow pan traps and net-sweeping in the elfin wood subzone in the lower course of the Anadyr River (Chukchi Autonomous Area). Only two species were abundant: Oscinella frit L. in yellow pan traps andPseudopachychaeta ruficeps Zett" in a sweep-net. The vast majority of grass flies did not occur outside the river floodland; the only exception was Ps. ruficeps which inhabited a wide range of biotopes including the hummocky tundra. Summarizing all theavailable published and original data has increased the number of Chloropidae species known from the Chukchi Autonomous Area to twenty-six. The taxo-nomic and trophic compositions of this fauna of Chloropidae are compared with the faunas of some regionsof the European North and Alaska. Suggestions are made on the preadaptations of some species which allowed them to colonize regions with arctic and subarctic climates.
