It is now almost forty years since negative heat capacities were found in systems in thermal equilibrium [1] and the paradox of their existence was explained [2] in terms of the difference between microcanonical and canonical ensembles. Since then many studies have identified systems with this behaviour including [3–11]. The subject has been reviewed by Padmanabhan [12], Lynden-Bell [13] and by Chavanis [14]. Nevertheless in [15] Michaelian and Santamar'a-Holek argue that negative heat capacities are impossible and that previous claims that they occur in systems involving either gravity or clusters are the result of lack of equilibration over all possible states.
