摘要

Despite significant improvements in survival rates of surgical colic over the past 20 years, ventral midline celiotomy incision infections remain a problem for equine surgeons. Incision infections, more recently referred to as ‘surgical site infections’ (SSIs), are a source of post operative morbidity, often require extended post operative care, delay return to function and increase client costs, all of which are a source of frustration to both owners and veterinarians. Furthermore, infection involving multidrug resistant pathogens makes treatment of some celiotomy SSIs challenging.
