History of THEW AUTOMATIC SHOVEL COMPANY 1895-1920

A substantial amount of text used in this article concerning early Thew corporate history came from an anonymous typescript in Thew records from the Don Frantz Collection, HCEA Archives. Other sources include articles appearing in Engineering News and En-gineering News-Record, period newspaper articles, U.S. Patent in-formation, and sales catalogs from the Don Frantz Collection, HCEA Archives and from the collections of Harry E. Young II and Keith Haddock. It has been said that any successful organization is but the shadow of one man. Accordingly, we find that the story of The Thew Automatic Shovel Company and eventually the Lorain brand of cranes and excavators should begin with an account of the life of Richard P. Thew.
