The Compliance Assurance Monitoring Rule

On October 22,1997,the U.S.Environmental Protection Agency issued the Compliance Assurance Monitoring Rule(CAM Rule),the long-awaited sequel to EPA's much maligned Enhanced Monitoring Rule.In summary,the rule will require owners or operators of major air pollution sources to conduct monitoring that satisfies particular criteria to provide a reasonable assurance of compliance with applicable requirements under the Clean Air Act.EPA intends that this monitoring will focus on emissions units that rely on pollution control device equipment to achieve compliance with applicable standards.The rule also provides procedures for coordinating these new requirements with EPA's operating permits program regulations
