Ion-dependeot ATPase activities in hemolymph, silkgland and gonads of pure Mysore Bombyx mori L. were determined from the fifth instar fifth day larvae and in adults under the influence of vertebrate hormone thyroxine. The 48 hour second instar larvae were fed with thyroxine (0.2 mg/g leaf) resulted in a sharp rise in ATPases and phosphatases. All the tissues showed altered Na~+- K~+ ATPase activity, Mg~(2+) - ATPase activity and Ca~(2+). ATPase activity with thyroxine treatment. There was an increase in oxygen consumption rate due to thyroxine feeding. The increased alkaline phosphatase and acid phosphatase activities in silkworm tissues indicate altered enzyme activities affeciing reproduction. Our results thus indicate that thyroxine has a controlling influence on the ATPase system in silkworm influencing protein synthesis and oxidative metabolisms.
