A field experiment was conducted during kharif season of 2000 to study the effect of nitrogen levels and planting geometry on urdbean (Vigna mungo L. Hepper) cv Pant U-19. Twelve treatment combinations, comprising four nitrogen levels (20 kg N/ha as basal, 20 kg N/ha as basal +10 kg N/ha as foliar, 30 kg N/ha as basal, +10 kg N/ha as foliar, and 30 kg N/ha as basal) and three spacing (20x10 cm, 25x10 cm and 30x10 cm) were tested in factorial randomized block design with three replications. The recommended doses of 40 kg P2O5 and 20 kg K2O/ha were applied as basal in furrows at the time of sowing in the form of single supper phosphate and muriate of potash respectively. Results revealed that the urdbean crop was influenced by nitrogen levels and population densities. Higher grain yield (11.8 q/ha), straw yield (47.6 q/ha), harvest index (19.9%) net return (Rs 9,761.5/ha) and benefit cost ratio (1.96) was obtained when 30 kg N/ha was applied as basal and sowing was done at 25x10 cm spacing (4 lakh plants/ha) and was found to be significantly superior among all the nitrogen levels and population density. Nitrogen, phosphorus and potassium concentration in grain and straw of urdbean and protein content (22.68%) in urdbean grain was higher when 30 kg N/ha applied as basal +10 kg N/ha as foliar was applied and crop was sown on 25x10 cm spacing (4 lakh plants/ha).
