Sterilization by copulation in Drosophila. (Special Issue: Female mating failures.)

Females in some species of the genus Drosophila (Diptera: Drosophilidae) are rendered sterile by mating. I review cases where these failed matings occur between closely related species as well as between closely related individuals of the same species. I also discuss the evolutionary implications of both types of failed matings and suggest how a better understanding of Drosophila ecology could assist in interpreting these failures. I further suggest that future studies of female mating failures in Drosophila be conducted in the framework of the differences observed in their matings, as this may offer a way to test predictions about the relationship between mating system type and female mating failures.Digital Object Identifier http://dx.doi.org/10.1111/eea.12020
