Giant fresh water prawn larvae were reared in tanks with direct sunlight (1850 lux), indirect sunlight (transparent roof and fluorescent lamp, 1850 lux) or 20% light intensity (shade cloth, 370 lux) at stocking densities of 60, 100 or 120 larvae perlitre. Direct sunlight caused 100% mortality. Maximum survival (56.2%) and growth (7.7±0.2 mm at 32 days of age) were obtained with a stocking density of 60 larvae per litre and indirect sunlight. Survival rates decreased as stocking density increased in this treatment. Survival rates were similar for the 60, 100 and 120 larvae per litre stocking densities with the 20% light intensity (54.4, 55.2 and 54.1% respectively) due to turbidity and reduced cannibalism.
