Growth performance of Rhode Island Red, Vanaraja and Desi (non-descript) chicken in intensive system of rearing (California type).

A comparative study was conducted to evaluate the growth performance of Rhode Island Red, Vanaraja and Desi (non-descript) chicken in intensive system of rearing. One hundred chicks from each group with same management, feeding and healthcare were undertaken in the study. The data were collected weekly basis from 0 to 21 weeks of age for both male and female separately. The mean body weight of male and female up to 6 weeks was the highest in RIR (639.81+or-0.72 g) followed by Vanaraja (633.91+or-0.92 g) and Desi (219.26+or-0.68 g). But for female up to 6 weeks of age Vanaraja (534.12+or-0.73 g) attained higher weight than RIR (439.84+or-0.52 g) and Desi (187.93+or-0.89 g). The mean body weight of male and female up to 14 weeks was highest in RIR (1491.39+or-0.53 and 1271.31+or-0.68 g respectively) followed by Vanaraja (1342.20+or-0.23 and 1048.48+or-0.61 g respectively) and Desi (792.51+or-0.30 and 576.96+or-0.49 g respectively). The mean body weight for both male and female up to 21 weeks of age the highest body weight was gained by RIR (2273.79+or-2.30 and 1762.59+or-1.19 g respectively) followed by Vanaraja (2021.04+or-1.69 and 1561.94+or-0.22 g respectively) and Desi (1420.65+or-1.83 and 1119.21+or-0.83 g respectively). The statistical analysis confirmed that there were significant differences between male and female of three types of chicken.
