A field experiment was carried out to study existing variation for cane yield and its attributing traits in mid-late maturing clones of sugarcane in 2006-07. The experiment was laid out in randomized block design having three replications and data were collected for 16 characters namely, germination percentage at 45 days after planting, number of shoots at 120 days after planting, number of shoots at 240 days after planting, number of leaves at grand growth stage, number of millable canes at 12 months, cane diameter (cm) at 12 months, single cane weight (kg) at 12 months, cane height (cm) at 12 months, number of internodes per plant, size of internodes (cm), sucrose per cent at 10 months, CCS per cent at 10 months, sucrose per cent at 12 months, CCS per cent at 12 months, cane yield (t/ha) at harvest and sugar yield (t/ha) at harvest. Recorded data revealed that sufficient variability was observed for all characters. Among them number of shoots at 120 days after planting, number of shoots at 240 days after planting, cane yield (t/ha) at harvest, sugar yield (t/ha) at harvest, number of millable canes at 12 months, germination percentage at 45 days after planting, single cane weight (kg) at 12 months, cane height (cm) at 12 months, and size of internodes (cm) showed high genotypic and phenotypic coefficient of variation. Out of sixteen characters studied, number of shoots at 120 days after planting, number of shoots at 240 days after planting and number of millable canes at 12 months possessed high heritability coupled with higher genetic advance.
