Derivatives of Harvested Wood and Their Role in Mitigating Climate Change

This study was made to quantify the carbon present in the harvested wood and its role in carbon sequestration. Wood extracted from ten commonly used tree species in the natural forests of Kodagu district in southern India, over a period of 12 years (1993 to 2004) was analyzed. A total of 94,436 Mt of wood was obtained from 1,32,735 m super(3) of round wood. The harvested wood was converted into various wood products after processing at different levels. During the processing, 49,390 Mt of wood go as waste, while 45,046 Mt wood is retained in the form of utility products. In terms of carbon in the harvested wood, out of 47,218 Mt of carbon in the harvested wood, 22,523 Mt of carbon is sequestered in wood products and 24,695 Mt of carbon is mostly re-emitted to the atmosphere through burning of waste wood which is used for fuel purpose.
