Effect of Seed Rate and Row Spacing on Yield and Quality of Two-Rowed Barley

The experiment was carried out in a split-plot design with four seed rate treatments viz. 75 kg/ ha, 87.5kg/ha, 100 kg/ha and 112.5 kg/ha as the main plot treatment and three row spacing viz. 18 cm, 20 cm and 22.5 cm as sub plot treatment with four replications. The cultivar of two rowed barly used was BH-885. There was significant increased in grain yield of barly with the increasing levels of seed rate up to 100 kg/ha. In the treatment, where seed rate was 112.5 kg/ ha was applied, there was an increase in yield but, it was found to be non-significant when compared with the treatment where seed rate of 100 kg/ha was applied. Application of 100 kg/ha produced 19.24 and 7.0% higher grain yield over 75.0 and 87.5 kg/ha seed rate, respectively. The highest grain yield was recorded at 20 cm of row spacing, but it was found to be statistically at par with spacing of 18 cm. However, they were found to be significantly superior over the treatment, where row spacing was kept at 22.5 cm. Quality parameterssuch as protein content (9.34%) and betaglucan (3.90%) were highest in 112.5 kg/ha,but malt yield was recorded highest in case of 75 kg/ ha seed rate (87.05%) and spacing of 18 cm (85.78%). On the basis of one year results it may be suggested that barley crop should be grown with seed rate 112.5 kg/ha and row spacing of 18 cm for better quality of two rowed barley.
