A field experiment was conducted in Orissa, India during 1992-93 and 1993-94 to study the feasibility of double cropping with niger (Guizotia abyssinica) as a second crop. The experiment had 18 treatments, comprising five rainy season crops and onefallow, each succeeded by three cultivars of niger. Radish-niger and French bean (Phaseolus vulgaris)-niger systems produced higher gross returns per hectare of Rs 14487-17746 and Rs 8220-9430 as compared to niger grown alone (Rs 3680-6666) and higher net returns per hectare of Rs 9087-12346 and Rs 3821-5030, respectively, compared with Rs 2016-4266 from niger alone. Other double cropping systems produced either lower or negative net returns. Among niger cultivars, UN-4 and IGP-76 were found to be suitable for the French bean-niger system and GA-10 for radish-niger system in the Eastern Ghat Highland Zone of Orissa.
