Leaf spot incited by Drechslera victroiae: an emerging barley disease in Uttar Pradesh.

A survey of barley growing areas of 6 districts of Uttar Pradesh, India, at post-flowering stage was conducted to ascertain the incidence and severity of leaf spot caused by Drechslera victoriae [Cochliobolus victoriae]. Among the districts over all average disease incidence (0.54%) and severity (23.00%) were observed, whereas average highest district wise was recorded in Azamgarh (0.64%) and Faizabad (28.00%). Artificially inoculated barley produced typical symptoms having oval to circular spots with dirty to ash-coloured spots separated from dark margins, which were similar to those observed under natural conditions. Out of 20 plant species inoculated with D. victoriae, only 5 were infected, i.e. Hordeum vulgare, Avena sativa, Panicum miliaceum, Paspalum scorbiculatum [Paspalum scrobiculatum] and Setaria italica, suggesting a narrow host range.
