Residual effect of pyrite and organic manures on iron nutrition of sorghum forage and yellow mustard.

Field experiments were conducted in Dholi Research Farm, Bihar, India, to investigate the residual effect of different levels of pyrite alone and in combination with organic manures (poultry manure, sewage sludge, biogas slurry and farmyard manure (FYM)) on orthophenonthroline reactive-Fe, forage yield of sorghum, grain and stalk yields of yellow mustard, concentration and uptake of Fe by sorghum forage and yellow mustard and DTPA extractable-Fe in soil. These parameters increased significantly with increasing levels of pyrite. The effectiveness of pyrite significantly increased when applied in combination with organic manures. The residual effect of organic manures persisted significantly even up to third crop of yellow mustard. The combined use of 5.32 q/ha pyrite and organic manure gave maximum orthophenonthroline reactive-Fe content in sorghum leaf, crop yields, concentration and uptake of Fe and its availability in soil.
