An investigation was carried out on the effect of pinching and nitrogen on the growth of the stock plant and to obtain number of quality cutting materials of chrysanthemum (Dendranthema grandiflora [Chrysanthemum morifolium]) cv. Kenroku Kangiku under polyshade during 2000-01. The treatments employed in this experiment were pinching (single, double, triple and quadruple) and nitrogen (10, 20, 30 and 40 g/m2). Phosphorus and potassium were applied at 10 g/m2 which were constant. The plot received double pinching (P2) produced more number of effective cuttings and total number of roots/cutting. In most of the cases, nitrogen at 40 g/m2 was found to be more effective than the lower doses. The interaction of pinching and nitrogen showed significant effect on the number of cuttings per plant and number of roots per cutting. The plots that received three times pinching and nitrogen at 40 g/m2 were found to be more effective in producing quality cuttings. Triple pinched plants produced quality cuttings and better rooting in cuttings. The application of increased level of nitrogen was also conducive to quality cutting production and better bloom.
