Pigment and Protein Content of Blue Green Algae (Anabaena doliolum Bharadwaj) as Influenced by Fly-Ash Leachate

Poor disposal of fly-ash leads to air and water pollution, which is a serious threat to fauna and flora. Anabaena doliolum is reported to grow well on fly-ash leachate. Present study was carried out to assess the performance of Anabaena doliolum in terms of pigments (chlorophyll and carotenoid) and protein content on fly-ash leachate. A pure strain of bacteria-free Anabaena doliolum Bharadwaj was prepared using Axenic culture. Growth of BGA was studied in four leachate dilutions viz. 25, 50, 75 and 100% and was compared with no-dilution (control). Results showed that incubation of Anabaena doliolum increased chlorophyll content linearly upto day 15, thereafter chlorophyll-ia content declined in all the dilutions except 100%. In general, 50% dilution of fly-ash leachate favored carotenoid and protein content of Anabaena doliolum. Results of the study revealed that the fly-ash can be successfully used for growth and development of Anabaena doliolum, which is a highly useful nitrogen-fixing blue green algae.
