Deodar seeds collected from the Lolab area of Kashmir valley (India) were subjected to stratification and treated with gibberellic acid at different concentrations to find their effect on germination and seedling growth. Germination was significantly enhanced by stratification of up to 75 days and thereafter decreased. Stratification of seeds for 75 days increased the germination percentage by 25% than the control. The soluble protein and total sugar contents showed similar trend. However, the starch content decreased with increased stratification duration. The seeds treated with 200 ppm GA3 showed highest germination percentage while soaking the seeds in 300 ppm GA3 for 24 h showed maximum seedling growth characteristics in the nursery. Stratification of seeds for 75 days recorded the maximum growth and biomass of the seedlings in nursery.
