The F2 and F3 segregating populations of 2 crosses (Jhona 349 x IET-12944 and Narendra 80 x Lalmati) in rice were advanced by single seed descent (SSD), mass selection (MS) and random bulk (RB) methods in India. The effect of the 3 methods were tested on changing the nature of association for yield and its components in their corresponding F3 and F4 generations. The MS method showed consistent correlation coefficients between spikelets/main panicle and grain yield/plant over breeding methods and generations. The results suggested that advancement of early segregating generations through mass selection method would be advantageous for higher grain yield with the help of spikelets/main panicle.
