An experiment was conducted in Punjab, India, during the rabi season of 2006-07 to study the effect of different irrigation and nitrogen fertilizer levels on onion bulb yield and water productivity in the presence and absence of farmyard manure (FYM). The treatments consisted of various levels of irrigation (IW/CPAN-E of 1.0, 1.5 and 2.0), 5 levels of nitrogen (0, 75, 100, 125 and 150 kg N/ha) and 2 levels of FYM (0 and 50 t/ha) in a loamy sand soil. The IW/CPAN-E ratio (2.0) resulted in the highest fresh bulb yield. Water use efficiency was greater at IW/CPAN-E ratio of 1.0 (5.47 q/ha per cm), whereas water productivity was greatest (5.06 kg/m3) at IW/CPAN-E ratio of 2.0. The crop responded significantly up to 125 kg nitrogen/ha. The application of FYM showed significant effects on fresh bulb yield.
