Identification of litchi cultivars through peroxidase banding patterns of isozyme.

Using polyacrylamide gel electrophoresis, peroxidase isoenzyme was investigated from leaf samples of 14 litchi cultivars. On staining, 19 loci and 60 bands were identified among the 14 litchi cultivars. The relative mobility values exhibited by identical loci were 0.32, 0.35, 0.76, 0.90, 0.94 and 0.97. These bands represent the unique characters of the respective cultivar. Polymorphisms were observed for other 13 loci (i.e. 0.37, 0.40, 0.43, 0.46, 0.50, 0.54, 0.57, 0.59, 0.62, 0.66, 0.69, 0.72 and 0.74 relative mobility values) where several alleles showed similarities and dissimilarities among the cultivars. There was high percentage (50%) of similarity between Muzaffarpur and Elaichi; Rose scented and Seedless Late; China and Early Large Red; and China and Seedless Late, while low percentage of (11.11%) similarity was found between Muzaffarpur and Seedless Late; Purbi and Bedana; Purbi and Early Large Red; Purbi and Seedless Late; Bedana and Seedless Late. The effect of cultivars on the variation in peroxidase zymogram was noted.
