A field experiment was conducted in Gayeshpur, West Bengal, India, to study the effects of sowing date (10 November, 25 November and 10 December) and tillage (no-tillage, minimum tillage or ploughing once, and conventional ploughing or ploughing 3 times) on the performance of rabi rape grown after rice. The delay in sowing significantly reduced plant height, number pf primary branches per plant, root dry weight, number of pods per plant, number of seeds per pod, and test weight. The highest seed yield (9.73 quintal/ha), straw yield (28.07 quintal/ha) and net return (8713 rupees/ha) were obtained with sowing on 10 November. Among the tillage systems, conventional tillage resulted in the greatest plant height (109.85 cm), number of primary branches per plant (17.98), root dry weight (922.11 mg per plant), root volume (2.63 ml per plant), number of seeds per pod (20.70), seed yield (8.70 quintal/ha) and straw yield (24.47 quintal/ha). The highest net return (6873.3 rupees/ha) was obtained with minimum tillage. The interaction between sowing date and tillage system was significant for number of primary branches per plant, number of pods per plant, seed yield and straw yield. [1.0 quintal=100.0 kg].
