A field experiment was conducted in India, during the 2003-04 and 2004-05 rabi seasons, to study the effect of nitrogen (N) fertilizer levels, irrigation regimes and weed control methods on yield and grain quality of bed-planted durum wheat on loamy sand soil, low in organic carbon and available N and medium in available phosphorus and potassium. Increase in N application from 90 to 120 kg/ha significantly improved the grain yield and quality parameters, such as protein content, beta -carotene pigment and grain hardness, and reduced the yellow berry incidence during both ears. Differential irrigation regimes failed to produce any significant differences. Application of clodinafop at 0.06 kg/ha resulted in 14.4% higher grain yield than the weedy control on average and improved the protein and beta -carotene content of grains.
