Earthen spawning pool-a low cost system for commercial spawning of the Indian major carps

During the spawning season in 1989 and 1990, 10 experiments were conducted with the 3 Indian major carp species Catla catla, Labeo rohita and Cirrhinus mrigala. Earthern ponds, 11.66-23.70 m3 in volume, were constructed in 4 villages in Orissa, India. The ponds were trapezoidal in shape, lined with sand and had an inflow and outflow system. Fish were given or not given a single dose of carp pituitary extract (8-10 mg/kg for females and 3-4 mg/kg for males) and released into the ponds. Spawning wasobserved in all ponds, starting 2-3 h after the fish were released and continuing for 3-4 h. 1.5-3.5 million eggs were harvested. Net incomes of Rs 3842 and Rs 9750 were calculated for the 1.66- and 23.70-m3 ponds respectively.
