An experiment was conducted to determine the efficacy of spiromesifen, a novel acaricide, against the tea red spider mite Oligonychus coffeae. Six different concentrations of spiromesifen (0.01, 0.005, 0.002, 0.001, 0.0006 and 0.0003%) and a standard dose of dicofol (0.05%) along with an untreated control (water spray) were used under laboratory conditions. The mortality count for the adult and nymphal stages were taken on 1, 3, 5 and 7 days after treatment (DAT), whereas for ovicidal action, the mortality count was taken on 8 DAT. All treatments resulted in the mortality of both adult and nymphal stages and were significantly superior over the control. Dicofol at 0.05% provided the highest mortality of adult and nymphal stages of O. coffeae on 7 DAT. However, spiromesifen provided good mortality of the mites even at lower concentrations.
