Field experiments were conducted in Ludhiana, Punjab, India during the rabi seasons of 1997-98 and 1998-99 to evaluate the water use, water use efficiency and crop yield of bed-planted wheat cv. PBW 343 under various seed rates and spacing (100 kg/ha at 3 rows/bed; 66.7 kg/ha at 2 rows/bed; and 44.5 kg/ha at 2 rows/bed) and irrigation levels (0.65 and 0.95 IW:CPE ratio). Total water use was higher under 0.95 than 0.65 IW:CPE ratio. Seed rates of 44.5 and 66.7 kg/ha, with 2 and 2 or 3 rows/bed, respectively, produced grain yield significantly at par with each other. Water use efficiency was high under 0.65 IW:CPE ratio. The maximum water use per day was recorded during 101-130 days after sowing. The soil water amount was higher under 0.95 than 0.65 IW:CPE ratio..
