A field experiment was undertaken in Bangalore, Karnataka, India, during kharif 2003 to investigate the efficacy of some fungicides against neck and finger blast disease of finger millet, caused by P. grisea [Magnaporthe grisea]. In one experiment, a single spray of different fungicides was given at the time of boot leaf stage, In another experiment, 2 sprays were given, first at boot leaf stage and the other at 7 days after the first. The different contact and systemic fungicides sprayed in 2 different stages were tricyclazole (Beam; 0.05%), carbendazim (Bavistin; 0.1%), edifenphos (Hinosan; 0.1%), iprobenfos (Kitazin; 0.1%) and mancozeb (0.2%). The least neck blast of 2.41, 0.66, 1.20 and 2.66% was recorded in plots treated with single spray of Beam, Bavistin, Hinosan and Kitazin, respectively. Complete absence of neck blast incidence was recorded in plots treated with 2 sprays of Beam. The least reduction of neck blast (19.00% and 15.22%) was found in plots that received single and double spray of mancozeb, respectively, when compared to the control (40.44%). Finger blast severity of 7.70, 9.20, 8.70 and 8.20% was found in single spray compared to 2.50, 3.80, 3.70 and 3.90% in double spray of Beam, Hinosan, Bavistin and Kitazin. Mancozeb was the least effective for both neck and finger blast. Complete absence of black seeds in an ear head was noticed in plots which received single and double spray of Beam and Hinosan. A significant increment in yield (1.272 kg/plot) was recorded in plots which received double spray of Beam compared to other treatments..
