a study was conducted during the summer season of 2004 in Bangalore, Karnataka, India to evaluate the resistance of 124 sunflower hybrids to leaf spot/blight (Alternaria helianthi), rust (Puccinia helianthi) and necrosis diseases. Cultivars Morden and KBSH I were used as susceptible control cultivars for leaf spot/rust and virus diseases, respectively. Alternaria leaf spot/blight severity among the hybrids ranged from 3.0 to 25.00. Twenty-six hybrids (PEH-K04 hybrids 2, 4, 6, 7, 8, 15, 26, 27, 32, 38, 39, 44, 46, 61, 65, 74, 79, 81, 88, 89, 90, 98, 102, 117, 118 and 119) showed resistance with less than 5% disease severity. Rust severity was high, and was in the range 0.00-41.67%. Fourteen hybrids showed immune response to rust: PEH-K04 hybrids 2, 15, 27, 39, 46, 60, 88, 96, 105, 114, 118, 119, 120 and 121. Seven hybrids (PEH-K04 hybrids 2, 15, 27, 39, 46, 88 and 119) showed combined resistance to leaf spot/blight and rust. Necrosis virus incidence was in the range 0.00-16.66. Only 9 hybrids showed less than 1% viral disease incidence: PEH-K04 hybrids 43, 50, 60, 77, 80, 81, 84, 92 and 98..
