Screening of Brinjal Germplasm Against Shoot Fruit Borer and Phomopsis Blight

The present investigation was conducted during 2012-13. Thirty two brinjal genotypes were screened against shoot and fruit borer (SFB) under field conditions and differential response to the pest was noticed. The minimum fruit infestation at all 80 DAT, 90 DAT and 100 DAT was observed in Vellayani Local-SM-44 (12.80,17.04 and 16.64 respectively) followed by Vijay SGS-548 (18.23,22.61 and 22.49 respectively). None of the genotypes were completely tolerant (T) to the pest while 6, 9 and 15 genotypes were categorized under moderately resistant (MR), susceptible (S) and highly susceptible (HS) respectively. The highest fruit yield was recorded in Thakkallapalli Local-3 (2509.73 g) followed by Selection Pooja (2989.40 g), Gopulapur Local -2 (2181.33 g) and Surya (1947.93 g). The 32 genotypes were also screened against phomopsis blight artificially in pot culture, based on the percentage disease index (PDI), Vellayani Local (12.22). Kakamoola Local-2 (12.22) andCharlapalli Local (16.67) were moderately resistant to the disease. On the other hand, Haritha (62.22), Swetha (62.22), Thakkallapalli Local-2 (63.33), Palakurthi Local-2 (65.56), Gopulapur Local-3 (67.78), Suketh-111 (63.33) and Vellanikkara Local-2 (61.11) were the susceptible genotypes to the phomopsis blight disease. Remaining categories i.e., moderately susceptible and susceptible comprised 13 and 9 genotypes respectively. Kakamoola Local-2 was moderately resistant to both SFB and phomopsis blight.
