The effects of N and P rates (40 kg N + 20 kg P2O5 and 80 kg N + 40 kg P2O5/ha) on the performance of 15 S. bicolor cultivars under rainfed conditions of Pantnagar, Uttaranchal, India, were studied during kharif 1998 and 1999. N (urea) was applied at 50% of the total rate with P (diammonium phosphate) one day before sowing. The remaining N was applied one month after sowing (25%) and at approximately 20 days thereafter (25%). SPH-960 recorded the highest average number of green leaves (11.65), leaf area index (6.43), dry matter accumulation (94.59 g), panicle weight (46.97 g), panicle length (27.5 cm), panicle diameter (9.74 cm), grain weight per panicle (35.60 g), grain yield (46.49 quintal/ha), harvest index (31.70%), and uptake of N (140.56 kg/ha) and P (37.29 kg/ha). SPH-792 registered the highest average stover yield (124.32 quintal/ha) and K uptake (169.97 kg/ha), and the shortest maturity period (96.0 days). Greater plant height (211.6 cm), number of green leaves per plant (10.56), leaf area index (6.01), dry matter accumulation (89.02 g), panicle weight (41.78 g), grain weight per panicle (30.34 g), number of grains per panicle (1318), grain yield (39.28 quintal/ha), stover yield (99.93 quintal/ha), harvest index (28.25%), and N (127.77 kg/ha), P (34.59 kg/ha) and K (145.40 kg/ha) uptake.
