The growth performance of six nitrogen fixing tree (NFT) species i.e. Acacia catechu, Acacia nilotica, Albizia procera, Albizia lebbek, Dalbergia lalifolia and Dalbergia sissoo planted in three types of soils i.e.. poorly drained clayey, gravelly clayloam and loamy skeletal was studied and subsequent organic matter accumulation and nitrogen enrichment were compared by these species among respective soils. The survival, plant height and girth at breast height recorded after 10.1/2 years of planting showed that A. procera was found to be the most promising species followed by D. sissoo in these types of soils based on growth performance. The maximum survival was recorded by D. latifolia followed by A. catechu. The organic matter accumulation and nitrogen enrichment were maximum by A. procera followed by D. sissoo and minimum by A. catechu.The gravelly clay loam soil was observed to the comparatively more suitable among all these three types of soils based growth performance of all six tested NFT species, organic matter accumulation and nitrogen enrichment.
