Survey and collections of multi-crop germplasm from southern parts of Mizoram, India.

An exploration trip was conducted in February 2005, for the survey and collection of multicrop germplasm from four districts (i. e. Serchhip, Lunglai, Lawngtlai and Saiha) of Mizoram. In all 50 sites were visited. The explored area lies between the 200 to 1,500 meter altitudes above msl. Individual and selective sampling methods for collection were adopted for horticultural crops, while population sampling was made randomly or in bulk for other agricultural crops. Mostly the local landraces and primitive crop cultivars of germplasm were collected during this trip. The agricultural practices followed by the people of surveyed areas were mostly concentrated on jhum (shifting) cultivation. A total 403 accessions of different agri-horticultural crop germplasm were collected during this study. Local indigenous technical knowledge practiced by the farmers was also recorded.
