A field experiment was conducted during kharif 2001 to study the effect of finger millet (cv. VL-149) and black gram (cv. TAU-2) intercropping on total biomass production, land equivalent ratio and finger millet equivalent yield on vertisols of Chhattisgarh Plains of India. The treatments consisted of sole finger millet, sole black gram and finger millet + black gram in 1:1, 2:1, 2:2, 4:2, 6:2, 1:2, 2:4 and 2:6 ratio. The highest total biomass production of 42.48 q/ha was obtained under finger millet + black gram in a 6:2 ratio, while the highest land equivalent ratio of 1.13 was recorded in finger millet + black gram in a 2:6 ratio. The highest finger millet equivalent yield of 20.79 q/ha was obtained in sole black gram and in intercropping systems with high proportions of black gram..
