Performance of different sealants for control of seepage from farm ponds.

To have higher amount of water stored in the farm pond, different lining materials were tested. Result showed that among the lining materials, LDPE (600 gauge) overlaid with bricks had a seepage of 2.76 cm/day and LDPE over laid with soil-cement plastering in brick frame work had 2.88 cm/day seepage. The soil + cement (8:1) lining had a seepage of 2.94 cm/day compared to control (10.90 cm/day). The extent of seepage loss was higher with increase in the hydraulic head irrespective of the treatments. Considering the costs, LDPE lining overlaid with bricks was Rs 7.15 per m3 of water stored compared to Rs 6.5 per m3 of water stores in pond lined with soil + cement mixture. However, the pond lined with soil and cement was cheaper and effective in red soil regions.
