Evaluation of Storage Behavior of Different Potato (Solatium tuberosum L.) Germplasms at Ambient Condition

In developing countries like India, the most striking problem is that most of the potato growers fall under the categories of small and marginal farmers.They are unable to store their potatoes in cold storage due to inadequate facilities and also associated with high rental charge, hence resort to sale their produces at very low market rates or stored them at prevailing ambient temperature. Shelf life of potatoes stored at ambient condition mainly depends upon genotypes. Keeping view towards this fact, an investigation was carried out during spring-summer season 2006-07 and 2007-08 with 35 genotypes of potato including some commercially released varieties from Central Potato Research Institute (CPRI), Shimla, HP to evaluate the storage behavior of different potato (,Solarium tuberosum L.) germplasms at ambient condition. An increase was noticed in rottage both by number and weight found with increasing storage du-ration. Percent total weight loss (rottage + physiological weight loss) was minimum (6.67%) in Kufri Pukhraj and maximum (26.07%) in J/93-87 at 60 days of storage. Maximum days to initiation of sprouting was recorded in Kufri Sultej (48.66) followed by J/93-139 (45.33) and J/95-227 (45.00) and earliest sprouting initiation was found in MS/92-3146 (29.66). Minimum sprout weight was found in Pant Selection-1 (5.37 g/ kg of tuber) and J/93-86 (5.99 g/kg of tuber).
