Vegetable growers' extent of precautions in application of pesticides in north 24 Parganas district of West Bengal.

To feed the burgeoning population of India more food has to be produced and this has to be done without degradation of the resource base. Modern crop production technology has considerably raised output but has created problems of land degradation, pesticides residues in farm produce, gene erosion, atmospheric and water pollution. The natural resource base is degraded and diminished and the quality of the environment sustaining human life is adversely affected. So, emphasis was given in this study to assess the extent of precautions followed by the vegetable growers in application of pesticides. The study was conducted in North 24 Parganas district of West Bengal. For the selection of area and respondents, multi-stage random sampling technique and universe method were adopted. The study revealed that a considerable number of respondents did not follow the specified precautions properly. Therefore, the vegetable growers must follow the precautions studied in the present investigation properly and extension agency must carry out more awareness programs on it for enhancing their knowledge level.
