Evaluation of Onion (Allium cepa L.) Genotypes for Growth, Yield and Quality Parameters under Central Dry Zone of Karnataka

An investigation was conducted to ascertain the production potentials of different genotypes of onion {Allium cepa L.) were carried out during late kharif of 2011-12. A study comprises 22 genotypes (Light Red. Bhima Super, Poona Pursangi, Bhima Shakthi. N-53, Satara Garva, N-2-4-1, Arka Pitamber, Arka Rose, Agri Found White, NHRD Red, Agri Found Rose, Agri Found Dark Red, Agri Found Light Red, Arka Hindu, Arka Niketan, Arka Pragathi, Mahalakshmi, Super Flare, Arka Kalyan, Prema-178 and Bellary Red) and evaluated for growth, yield and quality parameters to identify the high yielding genotypes and were tested at this center and laid out in randomized complete block design witli three replications. The results revealed that, the highest and significanttotal bulb yield (25.63 t/ha) was noted in the genotype Bhimashakthi. The parameters polar diameter of bulb (3.84 cm), equatorial diameter of bulb (4.27 cm) and ten bulb weight (535.33 g) recorded significantly higher in the genotype Bhimashakthi. All the genotypes differed significantly for the character stud-ies. Among the different genotypes tested, Bhima Shakthigave highest total bulb yield and can be taken up for profitable crop of onion during late kharif season.
