A field experiment was conducted during August to December 2008 to study the influence of different irrigation regimes and nitrogen levels on water balance component and water expense efficiency of jute ( Corchorus olitorius) seed crop by vegetative propagation. The result showed that irrigation brought changes in the moisture status of the soil and affected the water expense of jute seed crop. Maximum WEE (5.86 kg ha -1 cm -1) was observed under maximum wet situation and with highest N application i.e. in I 3N 4 treatment combination (irrigation at psi m=-0.03 Mpa at 30 cm soil depth with 40 Kg N ha -1) as compared to I 2N 4 treatment combination. Minimum or lowest WEE (4.10 kg ha -1 cm -1) was observed in rainfed condition with lowest N-level i.e. in I 1N 1 treatment combination.
