The Belo Monte Dam Case

The Brazilian Institute of Environment and Renewable Natural Resources (Institute Brasileiro do MeioAmbiente e dos Recursos Naturais Renovdveis - IB AMA) approved the partial construction licence needed to start the construction of the Belo Monte damcomplex near Altamira, in the heart of the state of Para and the Amazon rain forest. This licence, the last legal step needed to start construction, was granted despite the fact that the project did not comply with the legal, environmental and social conditions required by Brazil's environmental legislation, and only after the resignation of the agency's director, Abelardo Bayma Azevedo.
